Tribute

Elijah shared our dream to create a world class medical research university here in Astana. He was passionate about all aspects of academic integrity, and took time out of his busy schedule to communicate this passion to students and colleagues.

While excelling in teaching, research and clinical skills, Elijah thoroughly enjoyed learning the language of his host country. He practiced Kazakh language with his students before every class. He could laugh at his own attempts to pronounce words correctly, and he learned from everyone he met. By showing genuine respect for Kazakh culture, Elijah earned the genuine respect of the university community and the broader community.

Tribute

Elijah met with us regularly for a Bible study at our apartment in Astana. We were working systematically through the Epistles at the time, and took turns to prepare the questions for the study, and a short time before he went to be with his Saviour, I emailed him to ask if he would lead us in a study on 1 Timothy 4, Paul’s Valedictory:

"For I am already being poured out as a drink offering, and the time of my departure is at hand. I have fought the good fight, I have finished the race, I have kept the faith. Finally, there is laid up for me the crown of righteousness, which the Lord, the righteous Judge, will give to me on that Day, and not to me only but also to all who have loved His appearing."

Always meticulous in his preparation, he sent me detailed notes in advance, which I mercifully did not delete, and which I thought you might be encouraged to read below:

  BIBLE STUDY ON II TIMOTHY 4: 1-22.          Dec 10, 2016

Background:

*Chapter written by Paul to his adopted son Timothy who was the Pastor in change of the young church in Ephesus. Paul circumcised Timothy by the time Tim was probably about 25 years old Acts 16: 1-3!! Written about AD 67 when Paul was about 70 years old and Timothy about 34 years. Paul first met Tim in Lystra, by which time Tim was already a distinguished disciple. Tim joined Paul on his second missionary journey from Lystra! Lystra is not too far from Ephesus.

* Passage often referred to as Paul’s valedictory writing or his will

* Passage also referred to as passage for young Ministers in charge of a congregation.

*I love this passage of Scripture for many reasons. Thanks to David for asking me to lead its preparation!

Passage divided into 6 parts;

1. Preach the word Vs 1-5

2. Paul’s valedictory message Vs 6-8

3. The abandoned apostle Vs 9-16

4. The Lord is faithful Vs 17-18

5. Timothy: come before winter! Vs 19-21
